Top Ten Female Tap Dancers (Part Two)
It's no secret that we here at World of Dance love tap dancing. Tap may not always get the recognition it deserves but this classic genre will never go out of style. So kick up your heels and enjoy part two of ourTop Ten Female Dancers, and be sure to check out part one if you haven't already.
Ann Miller
Ann Miller was a triple threat: an incredible singer, actress, and dancer with award winning legs. A chance meeting with the famed Bill “Bojangles” Robinson as a child inspired Miller to take up tap dancing, and at just fourteen she starred opposite Ginger Rogers in Stage Door where she received positive reviews. Miller went on to star in over forty films and danced opposite the likes of Fred Astaire, Cyd Charisse, and Gene Kelly.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvGPCFrMnSU
Maud Arnold and Chloe Arnold
These talented sisters are making waves in the tap community, driven by their love of dance and desire to make space in the genre for women of color. They founded Syncopated Ladies, an all-female tap dancing group, in 2013 and run the Chloe and Maud Foundation which seeks to give young people access to dance. They have done dance tributes to everyone from Prince to Rihanna and Beyonce herself endorsed their video on her website.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHpjIvSMZwk
Ginger Rogers
Ginger Rogers is one half of arguably the most famous dancing duo of all time but proved herself as an incredible solo dancer and talented actress as well, winning a Best Actress Oscar in 1941. An undeniable beauty, Rogers was one of the biggest stars of the thirties and forties with cartoonist Bob Thaves once writing “sure he [Fred Astaire] was great, but don't forget that Ginger Rogers did everything he did…backwards and in high heels.”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAB12aeI6nA
Brenda Bufalino
Author, actress, teacher, choreographer, and dancer, Brenda Bufalino is a legend in her own right. She has won numerous awards, performed as a soloist as Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center, toured the world with the late Charles “Honi” Coles, and founded the American Tap Dancing Foundation in 1986.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=931ghUsluIY
Vera Ellen
Though not as well remembered as some of her peers, Vera Ellen was every bit as talented as her contemporaries, becoming one of the youngest, and shortest, members of The Rockettes as a teenager. Though she only made fourteen films (most notably White Christmas and On The Town), Ellen danced with some of the biggest stars of the day, including Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, and Danny Kaye. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UL0AL_BYlJA
