In a recent conversation with Director Joshua Cesan, we delved into the remarkable journey of ID Co, from its roots as Identity Dance Crew in 2008 to evolving into a dynamic company in 2014. Codie shared insights on their unique dance style, 'Glitching,' the memorable experience of performing at WOD, and what's on the horizon for ID Co in 2023.

The Genesis 

In the dance game since 2008, ID Co officially hit the scene in 2014. What began as the Identity Dance Crew evolved into a full-blown company. Born out of a passion for dance and a desire to teach the next generation, the crew's success in competitions and events led to an influx of eager learners, turning ID into a powerhouse in New Zealand.

The Art of 'Glitching' and Unparalleled Originality

ID Co is all about standing out. Over 15 years, they've crafted a unique style known as 'Glitching.' Director Josh Cesan created this blend of Popping, Animation, Isolation, and waving. They are huge lovers of many street styles often fusing them together. Their other main styles being krump, Popping and HipHop. If you had to sum it up in a few words: Futuristic, Technical, Rapid, Grimey, and 'Other Worldly.'

The Insane Journey to Now

Reflecting on the journey, Joshua painted a vivid picture of the crew's evolution “The journey from jamming boys to where we are now has been wild, filled with memories, challenges, and life lessons. One significant hurdle stands out – a battle with my injury since being hit by a car at 12. Despite the ups and downs, this struggle shaped our signature style, emphasizing isolations and arm techniques. Now, as a coach and mentor, I emphasize dancer well-being, drawing from personal experiences to instill habits of conditioning, warm-ups, healthy eating, and longevity in my students' careers. It's not just about the dance; it's a holistic commitment to well-being.”

Performing at World of Dance: Next Level Joy

Performing at World Of Dance was a pinnacle moment for ID Co. Joshua described the joy and energy as next-level. WOD was a game-changer for ID Co. The crowd vibe was unforgettable, and every dancer radiated joy. Shoutout to the staff and dancers for the warm welcome. Performing on such an iconic stage that so many greats have graced felt like a marquee moment in all of our dancing careers/journeys. It was an honor, adding another chapter to ID Co's legacy.

What's Cooking for 2023?

Looking ahead to 2023, he unveiled exciting plans for ID Co's 15th Anniversary Show, 'What if.' The crew is set to remix and twist their favorite routines for a fresh 2023 vibe.
