Exclusive Q&A with NBC World of Dance's Style and Grace

WOD: How did it feel when you found out you’d be on Season 3?
SG: We were so excited!! It was a long process and we anticipated an answer but when we finally heard back we were filled with so many different emotions - it was almost surreal.
WOD: What style are you performing, and why?
SG: Hip hop. It's the style we have been training in together since we started. We believe it separates us from other crews that have been on the show as we are the first all female hip hop team.
WOD: Where do you draw inspiration from? Who/what inspires you?
SG: Music, first and foremost! When choreographing it’s important to let the music move you. For a specific theme or idea we always try to incorporate different styles of hip hop and music. In terms of coming up with themes, we always try to show our strengths and even values as a group. Overall we draw our inspiration from how we want to portray ourselves as an all female group!
WOD: What do you think your fans would want to know about you?
SG: As women, we may often be overlooked, not respected as much as males, and it is definitely something we struggle with. But whatever role we play in our lives - as dancers, artists, moms, entrepreneurs, workers, we as women are resilient, and can do anything we put our minds to. We hope to inspire the women watching us on TV, as well as change the perspective of general audiences of what a female dancer is supposed to move/look like.
WOD: Why do you think dance is important to the world?
SG: It offers a light in a dark place. It brings communities together, it’s expressive, it’s freeing. As an art form, dance is so powerful, and should be celebrated! This show is a great platform for many dancers and hopefully shows more people that though it is an artform we should be respected as athletes as well.
WOD: What are you most excited/nervous about being on the show?
SG: We did have a fall in our first round, but we are excited for everyone to see us persevere and keep going, and that we made it to the next round and came harder!We are excited to represent Canada and of course empower other female dancers and women in general watching.
WOD: What cause or organization do you care about and would like World of Dance to promote?
SG: Dressember - an anti-sex trafficking and modern day slavery campaign where participants commit to wearing a dress every day of December to raise awareness and funds for organizations to rescue, restore, and rehabilitate victims. It is an issue we greatly care about as it mostly affects women and children around the world. A lot of the girls in Style and Grace have participated in this campaign, and we recently raised $2000 for this fundraiser from hosting a dance workshop in our community.
