Exclusive Q&A With NBC World of Dance's Get Down District
This all-girl group has taken whacking (or waaking) to a whole new level. Incorporating hip-hop elements into their routines, the Get Down District has proven their talent to the world. Find out more about them below in WOD Magazine's exclusive Q&A.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVsJpfTAuQc
WOD: How did it feel when you found out you’d be on Season 3?
GDD: We were all in shock and then started freaking out and crying. It is a dream come true to be able to experience it with these girls. Our team has worked so hard and we were ready for more hard work and for the journey to begin.
WOD: What style are you performing, and why?
GDD: The style we are performing is “Whacking” mixed with some hip hop. We are performing Whacking not just because of our amazing passion for it, but also because of Whacking’s inspiring story and background. Whacking is a style that started in the 70’s in an underground club called Gino’s. There was a group of gay men who weren’t accepted and started doing their own style of dance, which was Whacking to express and to be themselves. With our style, we want to show people to be yourself and to not be afraid to express who you truly are. It’s an underrated style, but it’s totally up and coming and you’re definitely starting to see it more.
WOD: What sets you apart from the competition?
GDD: What sets us apart from the competition is our fierceness and our fire when we are dancing. Coming from a small city and a small studio, we are grateful for everything. Our look is sweet and very girly, but once we start dancing we become fierce. The most important thing is we vibe together and give it our all.
WOD: Do you have a signature move/trick?
GDD: We have a lot of signature moves but sometimes we accidentally hit ourselves while whacking and we call it a “whackcident!”
